What we have heard and know, what our ancestors have told us we shall not conceal from our descendants, but will tell a generation still to come. (Psalm 78:3-4)

An Overview

The School of Religious Education participates in the mission of the Catholic Church to bring the Good News of salvation to each generation.   It is a faith formation process by which children attending public schools are instructed in the Catholic faith.  Even more it is a process by which children  constantly internalize what they learn and so they can manifest God’s love in their own lives.

The goals of the School of Religious Education are to have children and parents:

bullet

Value prayer and the Liturgical and Sacramental celebrations of the Church

bullet

Grow in knowledge and reverence of the Bible

bullet

Love the teachings and doctrines of the Catholic Church

bullet

Respect all people as children of God

bullet

Reflect the teachings of the Gospel in their words and actions

bullet

Share the Good News by serving others in the community

Sacramental Preparation

As children move through the faith formation process in the School of Religious Education they are prepared to receive the sacraments of Baptism (if they were not baptized as infants), Reconciliation (Confession), Eucharist (Communion) and Confirmation.

Readiness to receive these Sacraments of Initiation is determined by a discernment process during the the required   faith formation years, based on standards set by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.    This discernment process involves active participation by parents/guardian, the catechists (teachers of our faith), the Director of Religious Education and the Pastor.  Together they help to prepare the child or youth in making the choice of committing themselves to become a follower of Christ
