Small Church Communities

There are a lot of reasons why you should consider joining our Small Church Communities, but here are a few highlights:

• Multiple small groups available giving you lots of options for time and location
• Choose the group that best fits your schedule – find the time and day that works best for you
• Each session will focus on the Sunday readings for that week
• Sessions are only 90 minutes long
• Sessions run for only 6 weeks – no long term commitment

Never has there been a chance to get so much out of doing so little! Small Church Communities focus their ministry during those seasons of reflection and penitence – Advent and Lent. The readings during Mass for these seasons have been specifically selected to take you on a journey through the season, so why not take the opportunity to read these with members of your parish family, and take some time to reflect on how these readings relate to you and your daily lives.

Here's what some of our parishioners have said about Small Church Communities:

  • It really helped me to understand the Bible readings better.
  • It makes the readings at Mass mean so much more.
  • I enjoy getting together with my old friends and making some new ones too.
  • I feel like we're all learning so much together.
  • I can really understand what Father is saying during his homily after having discussed the readings in our group.
  • The whole experience, the readings, the conversation, the prayer, makes me feel closer to God.

Ever since the early 1960s, Our Lady of Refuge parishioners have been meeting in various types of small faith-sharing groups. The Small Church Communities (SCC) ministry has been active at OLR for over 20 years.

Small Christian Communities provide an excellent opportunity to meet fellow members of the parish family and to grow in faith with one another. We do this by reading and reflecting on the Sunday scriptures; discussing how they relate to our daily lives and relationships; and focusing on ways to be of service to others.

Ninety minute gatherings are offered during Advent and Lent, meeting once a week for 6 weeks, with opportunities to continue throughout the year. For more information please call Fred or Susan at 562-472-1532
